  4.     SOX - The Sound Exchange

  9. DESCRIPTION
  10.     SOX is a tool for converting between sampled audio formats.
  11.     It has been available for several years for Unix; MS-DOS and
  12.     Amiga ports first appeared early in 1992.  The present
  13.     release compiles fairly cleanly under Unix (SV or BSD), VMS,
  14.     MS-DOS/Borland, and AmigaDOS/SAS.

  16.     SOX understands most sampled audio formats in common use,
  17.     including 8SVX, AIFF, VOC, WAV, Sun .au, NeXT .snd,
  18.     Macintosh HCOM resources, IRCAM SoundFile, Turtle Beach
  19.     .SMP, .SOU, Sndtool, Sounder, and all raw (unheadered)
  20.     formats (8-,16-, or 32-bit, signed, unsigned, mu-law, or
  21.     A-law).  SOX is able to convert from any recognized format
  22.     to any other.

  24.     In addition, SOX is capable of performing certain types of
  25.     effects on sounds between the reading and writing phases;
  26.     these include low- and band-pass filters, resample (rate
  27.     change), echo, vibro, and channel conversion.

  29. REQUIREMENTS
  30.     A sampled sound file.

  32. OPTIONAL
  33.     68030 CPUs and 68881/2 Floating-Point processors are
  34.     supported (Amiga version only) through the use of four
  35.     separate program files.

  37. CHANGES
  38.     Since patchlevel 6 (Amiga 2.0):
  39.     - Several bugs fixed;
  40.     - 68030 versions available for AmigaDOS;
  41.     - "auto" type handler to automatically identify input files;
  42.     - "reverse" effect added.  (NOTE: I'm not sure whether this
  43.       effect ever made it into documentation, but it's there.
  44.       E.g., "sox foobar.voc raboof.iff reverse".)
